Oil on canvas Housed in its original deep walnut frame with gold liner Unsigned having a "M.J. Whipple's Artist Supply 35 Cornhill, Boston" circa 1850-1868 canvas stamp to verso NOTE: This painting is an exact period copy of Fitz Henry Lane's (American, 1804-1865) painting of the same title. It is the joint opinion of Sam Holdsworth and John Wilmerding who are collaborating on the catalogue raisonne of Fitz Henry Lane that this painting should be attributed to Mary Blood Mellen and that it is the opinion of Mr. Holdsworth that this is an early work most likely executed with access to the original. We would like to thank Sam Holdsworth and the Cape Ann Museum located in Gloucester Massachusetts for their help in cataloging this item. Mary Blood Mellen was a student of Fitz Henry Lane's during the 1850's. She is known to have expertly copied a number of Lane's works as well as some in collaboration. SIZE: 20" x 27". Overall: 26" x 33" PROVENANCE: This painting was found recently in a fishing camp that was started in 1911 by Arthur Fred Alden. CONDITION: As found with craquelure, paint loss to center right and right edge, surface dirt in need of restoration 9-28847
