Oswaldo Guayasamin (Ecuadorian/Maryland, 1919-1999), "The Burden", 1940, watercolor on paper, initialed "OGC" and dated lower right, 9-1/4" x 10-1/2". Matted, glazed and framed. Guayasamin attended the School of Fine Arts in Quito where he studied painting, sculpture, and architecture, and graduated with top honors. His first major exhibition was attended by the businessman and philanthropist Nelson Rockefeller who purchased several paintings and later arranged for the young artist to receive a grant to visit the United States. Guayasamin later visited Mexico and traveled across Latin America; it was during this time that he became involved in the various political situations of the region. A staunch defender and supporter of indiginous peoples, he was honored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization for his lifework towards peace.
