John Miller (British, 1931-2002) 'Goldfish in the poolroom' oil on canvas, signed, inscribed and numbered '2328 HJ' to canvas verso 23 1/4 x 29 1/2in. (59 x 75cm.) * John Miller was one of Cornwall's foremost artists of the second half of the 20th century. Elected to the Newlyn Society of Artists in 1961, he served as chairman for a number of years and was famed for organising the first modernisation of the Newlyn Gallery in 1968. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1964 and in 1974, his first solo exhibition in Penzance brought him wider recognition, the prelude to regular London and international exhibitions in New York, Vancouver and Europe through the following 30 years.
