Oil on canvas Germany, around 1940 Otto Eduard Pippel (1878-1960) - One of the most famous portrayers of South German subjects in the 20th century With the incised signature 'Otto PIPPEL' lower right; on the stretcher with the address label of the artist 'Otto Pippel, Planegg' as well as titled by hand 'Deutsche Ernte' (German Harvest) Ornamented wooden frame, partly gilt Overall dimensions, framed: 85 x 106 cm Good condition Provenance: Collection of the tenor Michele Tiziano A light-filled representation of a hay harvest, influenced by the characteristic style of late Impressionism, from the Pippel's mature creative period; oil paintings by the artist fetch over 61,000 Euros at international auctions The present painting by Otto Eduard Pippel titled 'Deutsche Ernte' (German Harvest) depicts a grain field during the harvest period. The German painter has rendered the light-filled view in an impasto paint application. Thus, the color haptic surface imitates the texture of the grain. The work features the artist's typical late-Impressionist brushwork. The harvest was one of Pippel's favourite subject matters, which he painted in numerous variations. Skillfully the artist repeatedly managed to capture the lively, summery mood in his atmospheric paintings. The painting is overall in good condition, showing only minimal craquelure. The edges show minor paint flaking due to rubbing of the frame, there is a small trace of color the upper left edge. According to the artist's label on the verso, the painting is covered with a special varnish and can be cleaned with water. The incised signature 'Otto PIPPEL' can be found on the lower right; the stretcher bears the address label of the artist 'Otto Pippel, Planegg' on the verso and is titled by hand 'Deutsche Ernte' (German Harvest). The frame shows signs of wear. The framed work measures 85 x 106 cm, the stretcher frame measures 90 x 51 cm. Otto Eduard Pippel (1878-1960) In 1896 Otto Pippel began studying at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Strasbourg to become an interior designer and decorative painter. After serving in the Russian army for four years, he continued his studies in Karlsruhe and then at the Dresden Academy under Gotthard Kuehl. Inspired by the French Impressionists, whose works he became acquainted with during a stay in Paris, Pippel decided to devote himself to the impressionist and plein air painting. In 1912 the painter joined the Munich 'Luitpold-Group' and showed his first work at the Glaspalast in Munich. From 1915 onwards he regularly participated in exhibitions. After the war Pippel returned to Planegg, where he created an extensive oeuvre. His Munich motifs, such as the Hofgarten, the Englischer Garten and the Hirschgarten are particular famous.
