Watercolor on laid paper Max Kaus (1891-1977) - German painter and printmaker Germany, 1939 Signed and dated 'MKaus 39' lower center Frame by Conzen, Dusseldorf Overall dimensions, framed: 76 x 92 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia Expressive flower piece from the artist's early creative period, rendered with broad impasto brush strokes; works on paper by Max Kaus fetch up to 25,000 euros on the international auction market This watercolor by Max Kaus was created in 1939. At this time the German painter had already been forced to give up his teaching position in Berlin, where he had taught figurative painting, and his works had been removed from the museums. The present drawing shows an expressive composition with a bouquet of gorgeous peonies whose leafy stems rise up from the lower margin. The artist skillfully placed the beautiful flowers before a plain background. Thus the vivid pink color of the blossoms, intensified with light accents in white, contrasts particularly well with the dark ground, bringing to bear the large colorful flower heads. The watercolor is overall good condition. The sheet is fresh in color and loosely placed under a mat. There are some superficial blemishes to the epidermis and minimal fiber attachments along the margins. The drawing is signed and dated 'MKaus 39' lower center. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 76 x 92 cm, the sheet measures 50 x 66 cm. In 1945 he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, where he was deputy director under Karl Hofer.
