Inspection under UV light reveals a band of restoration to the edges, strengthening to the darker details of the composition and retouching to the tomb. The lighter pigments are in good order. The stretcher of the unframed work measures 18.5 x 24.5 cm. Hans Rottenhammer (1564-1625) The painter Hans Rottenhammer was born in Munich and started his artistic career with an apprenticeship under the court painter Hans Donauer the Elder (1521-1596), from 1582 to 1588. This was followed by a longer period of artistic activity in Italy; from 1590 to 1596 he stayed in Rome, where he joined the group of Bamboccianti, followed by a trip to Venice, where he studied the works of Tintoretto and Veronese. In 1606, Rottenhammer was finally awarded the rank of master and citizen of Augsburg. He is well known for his cabinet paintings on copper in which he referred to the Venetian tradition of the late 16th century. Rottenhammer was also commissioned to paint large-scale altarpieces for churches in Munich and Augsburg and executed frescoes for the Munich Residenz.
