SAM GILLIAM (1933 - ) Untitled (Abstract Composition). Watercolor on thin Japan paper, 1971. Approximately 508x584 mm; 20x23 inches. Signed and dated in pencil, lower right. Provenance: private collection, PA. Sam Gilliam's early 1970s works on paper imitated his experimental draped canvases and floor paintings. They were also stained and saturated--the reaction of the thin paper to the wet paint was incorporated into the image-making.
