SAM GILLIAM (1933 - ) Black and Golden Door. Acrylic on birch plywood with aluminum construction and piano hinged door, 1996. 908x908 mm; 35 3/4x35 3/4 inches. Signed, titled and dated in ink on the verso. Provenance: private collection. Sam Gilliam made a series of acrylic and polypropylene three dimensional works on birch plywood constructions in the late 1990s. In 1998, the artist showed many of these in Solo Exhibition: Gilliam in 3-D at the Kreeger Museum, Washington, DC. Other larger examples from this year can be found in the collections of Smith College, Northhampton, MA, the University of Michigan Business School and the Department of Veteran Affairs, Philadelphia.
