THOMAS MORAN (1837 - 1926) Attributed, Oil on Canvas. A scene of The Colorado River. Signed lower left in monogram. Painting, 30''H. 25''W. Frame, 38''H. 32 3/4''W. '' THOMAS MORAN CONDITION REPORT This painting came to us through purchase from a local Antique shop here in the Pittsburgh Area. Further provenance is unknown. The painting was brought to us in deplorable condition. It had a 10'' tear at the left center and was amateurishly over painted, mainly in the mountains and trees with garish colors of neon orange and green. We first had to reline the painting with Belgian linen using the hot wax process. Next, we removed the over paint by chemically softening and removal with a surgical scalpel. This is a time consuming process that took roughly a month to complete. We then repainted only where necessary, using Maimari professional restoration paints which are pure pigment, ground in tree rosin. Our brushwork will vary from the original artist work. In the cleaning process, a hidden monogram was discovered under the fallen tree, in green. Under UV inspection, neither the monogram at the lower left nor the hidden monogram show signs of being tampered with and are original to the painting. The original stretcher bars are intact and bears another monogram. On the bottom, there are partial hand written letters in graphite, which we believe to be the title ''Colorado River''. We believe that this painting was done when Moran was commissioned by the government to paint areas of the Northwest. The painting measures 30''x25'' and is framed in a 4'' American Cove molding that is original to the painting. Deborah Westfall, Art Restorations by Carroll Westfall ''
