George Cruikshank signed British Watercolor Painting Lord and Maiden Hunting on Castle Lawn with Winthrop Stuyvesant Colonial New York Boston Family Provenance One of Two 19th century watercolor illustrations by British caricaturist and book illustrator George Cruikshank (1792 –1878), praised as the modern Hogarth during his life. His book illustrations for his friend Charles Dickens, and many other authors, reached an international audience. This painting may be the original illustration used for a book. Lords and maidens on horseback with dogs and a catch of fowl from a hunt in the foreground of a distant castle. Signed bottom center George Cruikshank with artist name below on hand ruled matting with Kennedy & Co. Rare Prints Framers label verso and inscribed owner’s name upper right, Bronson Winthrop. Provenance: Recently discovered in storage for years from the estate of a member of three of the most prominent New York and Boston colonial families including a descendent of Peter Stuyvesant, a descendant of the first Governor of one of the New England colonies and a descendent of the founder of one if the first banks in America.
