Heinrich von Zügel, A Street Robbery Signed and dated lower left: H. Zügel München 81This work depicts a roadside scene in Bavaria, recognisable due to the blue and white painted post in the background to the left. A family of dogs have made themselves at home in an abandoned handcart - the puppies sleep peacefully in a basket, watched over by their parents. However, the family is being visited by a dachshund who is eating from one of their bowls. Heinrich von Zügel has depicted the dogs with vaguely human features, lending the piece the character of a genre scene. The artist painted several such pictures in the early 1880s, in which animals are not seen merely as herd or farm creatures, but as the protagonists of anecdotal stories. These paintings also show Heinrich von Zügel's ability to realistically depict the textures of the animals' fur, as well as hay, wood and grass. 33.5 x 52 cm
