§ Sir Robin Philipson, RA, PRSA, RSW, RGI, HRHA (Scottish, 1916-1992) Indian Meadow signed on the reverse "Robin Philipson" oil on canvas h:75 w: 90 cm Provenance: Private collection. Sir Robin Philipson was educated at Edinburgh College of Art between 1936 and 1940, before becoming a lecturer there in 1947. He subsequently became Head of the School of Drawing and Painting, with student including John Bellany. His early works depict mainly landscapes, still lifes and interiors, some of which were heavily influenced by the expressionistic style of Austrian painter Oskar Kokoshka. His influences also stemmed from working with his co-members of the 'Edinburgh School' of artists, which included Anne Redpath and John Maxwell. Philipson stood as President of the Royal Scottish Society between 1973 and 1983, and his work serves as a significant influence on the Scottish Art scene, with works held in The Royal Scottish Academy, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, the Liverpool Walker Gallery, and many more.
