The portrait captivates through the suggestive character which lies in her sensitive look. It seems as if it was not only the artist's intention to depict the outer appearance of his model, but also to undertake some approaches to her inner life and melancholia. This is thoughtfully emphasized by the subdued colors, which the artist has applied with a pastose, slightly smoothed technique. It is remarkable how high the quality even of this early work from his art-school time is. The painting is in very good overall condition. There are light traces with tiny losses of paint, where the frame has rubbed. The work is signed and dated lower right "RAUCH 85". The wooden frame also appears in very good condition and measures 68.5 x 46.7 cm. The hardboard measures 60 x 38 cm. Neo Rauch (born 1960) Neo Rauch is one of the most important German painters of his generation and is considered as the precursor of the „Neue Leipziger Schule". In the 1980s, he studied at the Leipziger Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst; here, he was the student and later assistant of Arno Rink (born 1940) and became the master student of Berhard Heisig (1925-2011). Neo Rauch's style shows a close proximity to the Socialist realism, but also influences of Pop Art and Comic. Conceptually, he rather follows the surrealism. Since 1997, his works are regularly exhibited; e.g. in a retrospective at the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg (2006) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (2007). Neo Rauch received many prizes and honors and supported young talents as professor. His works reach record prices at international auctions and are collected by private and public institutions, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich.
