Oil on canvas Austria, around 1900 Emil Barbarini (1855-1933) - Austrian painter Signed "E. Barbarini." lower right Overall dimensions, framed: 85.5 x 75 cm Provenance: German private collection The artist Emil Barbarini is well-known for his atmospheric genre paintings. His depictions of market scenes fetch up to 22,000 Euros at international auctions The present impressionistic painting is a work of the Viennese artist Emil Barbarini and dates around 1900. It depicts a maid and a herdsman with his cattle on their way to the city on a fall day. Barbarini was fascinated by the rendering of the various atmospheric phenomena and often depicted the same scene in different light conditions. Here, he rendered the scene under a dark cloudy sky, impermeable to the light of the sun. The street is covered with a wet layer of leaves, slightly reflecting the silhouettes of the figures. The work appears in good condition. There are small framings marks with partial material losses to the right edge. In the left middle part, the canvas is slightly torn twice. The painting is signed "E. Barbarini" lower right. The gilt stucco frame shows only small traces of use. The framed work measures 85.5 x 75 cm. The stretcher measures 53 x 42.2 cm. Emil Barbarini (1855-1933) The Viennese artist Emil Barbarini was the son of the well-known landscape painter and etcher Franz Barbarini (1804-1873). In contrast to the alpine themes of his father, he early started to focus on depictions of market scenes. His favorite subject was the flower market in front of the Karlskirche in Vienna, but he also executed numerous market impressions of his study trips to the Netherlands and Belgium. Barbarini was mainly interested in the special handling of light at different times of the day. Similarly to the French artists Degas and Monet, he often painted the same subject at different times, in order to capture the light without the risk of thematic distraction. Paintings by Emil Barbarini are particularly sought-after by middle-European collectors.
