Schnackenberg has rendered a boozy celebration in the courtyard of a medieval castle. The alcohol is flowing in abundance and the guests, seated at a long table, seem to enjoy themselves. The personified spirit of wine is hovering above them. The artist exposes the frivolity and immorality of the event with humorous details and satirical innuendo in his typically cheerful narrative style. The drawing appears in very good condition. The loose sheet lies under a mat. The work is signed and dated lower right 'Schnackenberg 58'. The frame shows minor signs of wear. The framed work measures 79 x 65.5 cm, the image measures approx. 48 x 35 cm. Walter Schnackenberg (1880-1961) At the age of 19 Walter Schnackenberg went to Munich to attend the school of Heinrich Knirr. Afterwards he studied under Franz von Stuck at the academy where his talent for drawings and caricatures became apparent. His illustrations were published in the magazines 'Jugend' and 'Simplicissimus'. Schnackenberg undertook several trips to Paris, where he was particularly interested in the works of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. In 1908/09 he met Picasso. The artist established his reputation in the field of printmaking - his frivolous posters for the Deutsches Theater in Munich became legendary. Moreover Walter Schnackenberg became renowned for his designs of stage sets and costumes.
