Mount Baker from Yellow Aster Butte, signed lower left: Sydney Laurence, oil on canvas laid to canvas, 40'' H x 30.25'' W, est: $50,000/70,000. Note: Frederick Zeusler (1908-1947) was a career U.S. Coast Guard officer assigned to Bering Sea Patrol and Arctic Patrol including the revenue cutters ''Bear'' and ''Northland''. In addition to World War I and II campaign medals, Admiral Zeusler held the Bronze Star for his World War II service as commander of naval forces in the Sitka, Alaska area, and the Legion of Merit for service as district commander of the Seventeenth (Juneau) and Thirteenth (Seattle) Coast Guard Districts. After retiring from the Coast Guard in 1947, Zeusler served as an executive for the Alaska Steamship Company and wrote and spoke frequently on maritime topics. The present work originally hung on the USS Yukon and was given to Zeusler by the Alaska Steamship Company. Zeusler was active in civic organizations related to the Port of Seattle and the Pacific Northwest Maritime Historical Society. His marriage to Clarice, a schoolteacher he met while stationed in Port Angeles, lasted almost 50 years. Admiral Zeusler died in Santa Barbara, California, at age 91 on 14 December 1981.
