Francis Speight (NC/PA, 1896-1989), Steamboat 1819 oil on canvas, signed at lower left "F. Speight," an old paper label attached to the top stretcher is inscribed "Arrival of Steamboat - 1819 / oil on canvas," inscribed "65A" on the stretcher, the proper right stretcher also bears the Philadelphia art supplier's stamp "Henry M. Taws," housed in a period appropriate carved and gilt wood frame with linen liner. SS 13 x 38.75 in.; DOA 20.25 x 46 in. We wish to thank Barbour Strickland, co-author of the forthcoming book "Francis Speight and the Poetry of Place," for confirming that this painting was likely done for a mural competition in the mid to late 1930s.
