Manner of Albert Bierstadt Architectural Fantasy Bears signature ABierstadt (ll) Oil on canvas 27 x 36 inches Provenance: Robert L. Claridge, Kalispell, MT, 1983 Stanford University Museum of Art, Palo Alto, CA This intriguing panoramic image has in the past been attributed to Albert Bierstadt. The scene appears to be an imaginary architectural scheme, but it has yet to be linked with a particular location. Perhaps with such works as Thomas Cole's The Architect's Dream (1840, Toledo Museum of Art, OH) in mind, the artist depicted a walled enclosure around a single column. Beyond cleared fields, a parish church and other buildings stand in the shadows, while the trees of an orchard are arrayed in neat rows. At one time the scene had been identified as Project for a Washington Monument in the City of Baltimore but this has not been substantiated. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
