Verso inscribed 'Mutter u Kinder' [mother and children] Dimensions, framed : 87 x 87 cm Good condition Provenance : Austrian private collection This emotive oil painting by Max Frey shows an allegorical scene depicting a mother with her children on an inland marina in front of the silhouette of a fictional town. A steep cliff with stylised town houses and donjons rises in the background. Below stretches a picturesque lower town. The houses with stepped gables evoke the image of a prosperous ancient city, in the background the towers of the cathedral can be discerned. The muted colour palette adds to the peaceful atmosphere in this painting filled with pathos. The painting of Max Frey is in good condition with minor framings marks. There are partial colour touch-ups to the sky, the rocks, the sail as well as on the ground. The work is signed lower right 'MAX FREY.' The back of the board is inscribed 'Mutter u Kinder' [mother and children]. The frame shows signs of age and wear. Framed the work measures 87 x 87 cm, the board measures 70.5 x 69.5 cm. Max Frey (1984-1944) Max Frey was born near Karlsruhe. There he attended the Kunstgewerbeschule. From 1893 to 1903 he was at the Kunstakademie Karlsruhe. Amongst his teachers were such renowned artists like Ferdinand Keller and Leopold von Kalckreuth. In 1904 he lived for a year in Frankfurt and worked as a painter. 1906 he accepted a position at the Academy for Arts and Crafts in Dresden. There he also received his professor degree in 1910. At the beginning he held classes in art design, later also in landscape painting.
