In a spontaneous and dynamic attitude it depicts the portrait of a boy of the metropolis Berlin. The present work was created in 1959 and thereby falls into a period of the artist when he began to move away from German expressionism and developed towards a much more spontaneous and dynamic painting style. He belonged to the first generation of the Berlin 'Junge Wilde' in the 1980s together with Fetting, Salomé and Castelli. His paintings in expressive colours and forms enjoy great popularity. The painting 'Berlin Youngster' by Peter Keil is signed and dated on the lower right 'Keil 59', as well as titled, signed and inscribed on the reverse '"Berliner Junge" Peter Keil Berlin'. The painting is mounted in a brown painted wooden frame, of which the paint is chipping at some parts. The painting depicts framing marks, the varnish is soiled. The dimensions of the wooden panel are 48.8 x 34.5 cm, and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 60 x 44 cm. Peter Keil (born 1942) Peter Keil learned painting from his mentor Otto Nagel (1894-1967) in Berlin. Afterwards he trained as a metal worker. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin from 1959 to 1961. During the 1960s, he spent some time in London and Paris, as well as on the Balearic island Mallorca, where he got to work with Joan Miró. In the 1970s, he took more classes at the Berlin University of the Arts and got to know Georg Baselitz, Rainer Fetting and Markus Lüpertz. Next to paintings, the work by Keil encompasses also sculptures and ceramics. The oeuvre by Kreil has been the subject of a number of national and international single exhibitions. A major part of his work is located at the Keil Collection in Heidelberg, and besides that some works of his are held by the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, the Kunsthaus Zurich, and the Kesseler Collection in Orlando, Florida.
