Oil on Wood France, around 1860 Jules Achille Noël (1810-1881) - French landscape and marine painter Signed in the lower right 'Jules Noël' Overall dimensions, framed: 29 x 49 cm Provenance: German Private Property The painting 'The Coast of Northern France' by Jules Achille Noël - whose paintings have been praised by Charles Baudelaire for their clarity of colours and lines - is typical for this artist's oeuvre who specialized in maritime scenes. Comparable panel paintings fetch up to 25,000 euros at international auctions. This painting by the French artist Jules Achille Noël shows an idyllic part of the coast in the North of France. Noël preferred to paint the coasts of the Bretagne and Normandy and there is no one like him when it comes to catching the typical light and atmosphere of these areas. In the right foreground of the painting is the shore with a small path on it, on which several washerwomen walk along, dressed in traditional clothes. Fisher boats have landed on the shore and there are fishermen working on them. A wind mill is standing right of the path leading into the city, whose grey and red roofs and the tower of a compact cathedral as they can often be found in the North of France line the horizon. The sea in the left half of the painting is rather greyish, with whitecaps; seagulls circle above it and on the horizon in the far back, another windmill's silhouette can be recognized along the shore. Even though the sun is not shining and the sky is of a sad grey, the artist has created a friendly and light atmosphere thanks to the use of clear colours and precisely set brush strokes. The painting is in an optically good condition. There are framing marks around the edges that have been repainted; on the right border, the touch-ups reach a bit further into the painting, just up to the windmill. An approximately 7 cm long scratch reaches from the right edge into the painting. The painting is protected by a varnish. It is signed in the lower right "Jules Noël". The overall dimensions, framed, are 29 x 49 cm, the dimensions of the wooden panel are 21.2 x 41 cm. The stucco frame has visible traces of age and use and some material losses. Jules Achille Noël (1810-1881) Jules Achille Noël grew up in Quimper in the Bretagne and studied painting at the academy in Brest. He specialized early in landscape and marine paintings and used his spare time - he worked as an art teacher - to paint the coasts of the Normandy and the Bretagne. His motifs are often romantic, but always realistic. He was especially celebrated for his sensitive use of light; Charles Beaudelaire for example praised him for his clear colours and lines. Paintings by Noël are today shown in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Quimper and in the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille.
