The work at hand is attributed to him, as it shows his preference for gnarly trees that cut through the composition and for very deep landscapes. Works attributed to Rosa fetch up to 66,000 euros at international auctions The painting 'Landscape with Travellers' from the 17th Century is attributed to Salvator Rosa. It shows a group of travellers taking a break on a sunny spot in front of a broad, hilly landscape that blues into the background. A herder drives his cattle over the hill in front of him. A broad river winds through the valley in the middle ground, its blue colour forming a connection to the landscape and mountains in the back. The travellers, who journey with three pack animals and two docks, are shown talking or fastening their shoes. An attribution to the Italian landscape artist Salvator Rosa is reasonable because of stylistic similarities. The two trees in the foreground that oppose the horizontal landscape, are a typical element in Rosa's landscapes. So is the clouded sky. The painting has been in a private collection since the end of the 1920s. According to the owner, it was then directly acquired by the owner's family from the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin - written documentation by the consignor is at hand. The painting is in a condition befitting its age. The canvas has been relined for stabilization. The colour has been protected by a layer of varnish and shows craquelure. Underneath, several colour touch-ups to singular spots can be seen, especially an approx. 2 cm broad area once around the edges. A larger area around 20 cm above the travellers has also been restored. The stucco frame shows some traces of age and wear, such as minor material losses, mainly in the corners. The overall dimensions, framed are: 110 x 171.5 cm. The dimensions of the original canvas are 88 x 150 cm. Salvator Rosa (1615-1673) Salvator Rosa had begun studying literature and music but then discovered painting for himself and studied under Aniello Falcone (1607-1656). He went on a study trip in 1933 and according to the legend surrounding his life was held up in the Abruzzi and joined the bandits. Afterwards he lived in Naples and Rome, at the beginning in great poverty. Only with time did he manage to build up some clients and was thus able to afford a studio. He was called to the court in Florence in 1640. In his paintings, he focused on dramatic landscapes with rustic trees and heavily clouded skies. He is considered to be the founder of the realistic battle painting together with Falcone. His paintings can today be seen in the Louvre or the Uffizi in Florence, but also in many other important museums all over Europe.
