Kaufmann was born in Arad, Kingdom of Hungary (presently Romania), and worked in Vienna most of his life. He belonged to a group of artists who were born between the French Revolution and the Crimean War. They tried to express the emotional, sentimental mood of the era. Kaufmann was interested and creatively influenced by everyday Jewish life in Eastern Europe. He traveled through the cities of Poland, Ukraine and Galicia, collecting a range of materials for his many creations, particularly related to Jewish life. In his Viennese studio, Kaufman transferred the sketches he made during his travels to canvases. Many of his works decorated the homes of high and middle-class Jews and Christians in the cities in Western and Central Europe. Kaufmann expressed a rich, variegated life in his works and precisely sketched small details from Jewish life. Refer to lot 500, another one of his works.
