signed lower left oil on canvas Dawson is a renowned maritime artist. depicting sailing ships, usually clippers or warships, of the eighteenth and nineteenth century. Dawson spent his childhood studying ships from Southampton Water and was a naval officer during World War I. After the war he solidified his career as a maritime artist, and was employed as a war artist during World War II. His work was regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy of Marine Artists. Dawson's paintings are noteworthy for their perfectly executed nautical detail, as exemplified in 'Stormy Seas.' This painting embodies the distinct style of Dawson with the dark tonalities, distinct painterly technique and moody nature of the high seas.
