Alice Schille American, 1869-1955 Woman with Children Signed Alice Schille (lr); inscribed S.S. White/12th Chestnut St./Phil on the reverse Oil on canvas 22 x 18 inches Provenance: Estate of Samuel White, Philadelphia, PA Exhibited: Columbus, OH, Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts, 1910 (possibly) The present work is from a series of Dutch themes painted by Alice Schille between 1904-1908. Many of this group were painted in Volendam, but others were actually created in Schille's French studio. While they often tend toward opacity, passages in the present work, most notably in the face at center, demonstrate Schille's skill as a draftsman. The Philadelphia collectors Sam and Vera White, noted here in the provenance, owned many examples of her work. We thank James Keny of Keny Galleries for his kind assistance in authenticating this work. C Property of a Greenwich Village Collector
