Originally built for the Boston & Hingham Steamboat Company, the "Nantasket" spent her later years making runs between New York City and Haverstraw on the Hudson River. The painting depicts the builder handing the boat's papers to the owner on the upper deck. Oil on canvas, 30 x 50 inches. Inscribed "Painted by Bard 1858" l.r. and "Built by Thomas Collyer N.Y. 1857" l.l. Provenance: The Elwin M. Eldredge Collection, 1940; The Mariners' Museum, Newport News, Virginia; Sotheby's New York, June 21, 1996, lot 542. Literature: Listed in Anthony J. Peluso, Jr. "The Bard Brothers: Painting America Under Steam and Sail," p. 169. An almost identical Bard portrait of the "Nantasket," in the collection of the Shelburne Museum, is illustrated in Peluso, "J.&J. Bard: Picture Painters," p. 74.
