Warren Sheppard (American, 1858-1937) oil on canvas marine scene depicting the Grand Canal of Venice, signed lower left. Housed in an elaborate period gilt carved frame. Sight: 11 1/2" D x 17 1/2" W. Framed: 19" H x 25" W. Late 19th century. Note: This painting was evaluated by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. by then curator Perry B. Cott, letter included. Biography: A marine painter, Warren Sheppard was a designer and navigator of racing yachts and sailed widely along the New England coast. He won the famous New York-to-Bermuda race and published an authoritative book titled "Practical Navigation." He was also known for his canal scenes of Venice, many painted during his studies there from 1888-1893. He took art lessons from marine painter Maurice De Haas and exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association, the National Academy of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy.
