작품 상세

Not known until recently, this painting from a Spanish collection shows the appreciation of visionary landscapes in Alessandro Magnasco's early works, as explained by Giancarlo Sestieri. It depicts foothills before mountains and a river, several houses in the centre and snow-capped mountains in the distance. With quick and energetic, yet decidedly placed brushstrokes, Magnasco only alluded to forms in his conversion of scenes to canvas, here evoking the Lombardian foothills of his country. The landscape sets the stage for the small figures that go about their simple daily tasks. The style and composition of this painting are characteristic of Magnasco, as are the cool colours of blue, green, brown and white. Single flickers of light are emitted from the largely dark base coat. Bernard Aikema confirms the attribution to Alessandro Magnosco after examination of the original.
