작품 상세
Born in Zittau, the painter Albert Zimmermann studied in Dresden before settling in Munich in 1833. During this time he was guided by Carl Rottmann in particular. From 1857 to 1860 he was professor at the Milan Academy. It is not thought that he returned to Italy again and thus the painting was likely created during his time in Milan. Zimmermann preferred to paint large-scale works such as this; his "Landschaft auf der Bayerischen Hochebene" in the Frankfurt Städel is 170 x 208 cm and his "Walpurgisnacht" in Munich's Schack-Galerie 322 x 264 cm. Works by Zimmermann are also found in the Neue Pinakothek, Munich, as well as in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
