Vincenzo Irolli Italian, 1860-1945 Altar Boy Signed V. Irolli (ll) Oil on canvas 29 x 19 3/8 inches (73.6 x 49.2 cm) Provenance: Sale: Sotheby's, New York, Feb. 12, 1997, lot 270A Private collection, Roxbury, CT Irolli was an exponent of the new Neapolitan Realism in the late nineteenth century. Whereas many Italian artists of the era migrated to Paris, Irolli chose to live in Calvizzano, a small village outside Naples, where he painted maternal figures, portraits of children, genre scenes, and religious subjects. His lively style, characterized by spontaneous brushwork, rich color, and an exceptional handling of light, may be seen in this image of an altar boy acting as thurifer. The burning incense and the boy's white surplice shimmer in the darkened space. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
