The watercolor is registered at the Nolde foundation Seebull. A letter from Dr. Manfred Reuther and a photo-certificate of authenticity accompany the lot. This sheet belongs to a series of watercolors that the artist painted in March 1908 while staying in a room at the "Gruner Baum zur Nachitigall" tavern in the town of Cospeda, near Jena. On March 5, 1908 he wrote to his wife Ada about the evening shown in this work: There was a hilarious party yesterday evening! I sat in the middle of the taproom; on one side sat a table of older men who were playing cards. The host with his shaggy black beard looked on.
