Robert Emmett Owen American, 1878-1957 Connecticut Country Home Signed R. Emmett Owen. (lr) Oil on canvas 25 x 34 inches Provenance: Private collection This is an unusual image in Owen's oeuvre, as he rarely focused on specific houses. Seen through trees in various stages of fall finery, the large house belongs to the irregular Gothic villa style popular in the late nineteenth century. The classical portico on the front of the house, the broad circular driveway, and the columned vine trellis make clear that this is a place of gracious country living. The temperate weather and scattered clouds add to the feeling of delight no doubt felt by the artist on seeing this scene on one of his drives through the New England countryside. His images such as this were popular with the New York businessmen who purchased them in his New York gallery to evoke a world of unchanging stability. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
