Theodore M. Wendel American, 1859-1932 Town Hill, Ipswich - Winter Sunlight Signed Theodore Wendel (lr) Oil on canvas 20 1/8 x 24 1/8 inches Provenance: Vose Galleries, Boston, MA Private collection, Manchester, MA Exhibited: Philadelphia, PA, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, One Hundred and First Annual Exhibition, 1906, as Town Hill: Ipswich, no. 815 Philadelphia, PA, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, One Hundred and Fourth Annual Exhibition, 1909, no. 530 (as Town Hill: Ipswich) In his rediscovery of Wendel, the noted art historian John I. H. Baur noted that the artist's work is "marked by a gently lyrical feeling and an individual touch quite his own." Wendel applied his unique approach to the scenery of Ipswich, Massachusetts, where he settled permanently in 1898 at the family farm inherited by his wife. Painting this idyllic rural community in all seasons of the year, he expressed its stability and vitality. He conveyed both in this image, depicting the architectural structures of Town Hill massed above a snow-covered hillside and topped by the towering red-orange steeple of the First Church of Ipswich, while lavender and blue shadows and footprints on the snow create a contrasting energetic pattern.
