Luigi Lucioni American/Italian, 1900-1988 The Tang Figure, 1939 Signed L. Lucioni and dated 1939 (ll); inscribed as titled and dated 5/8/40 on the stretcher Oil on canvas 17 x 14 inches Provenance: Private collection Sale: Christie's East, October 4, 2000, Lot 171 Lucioni emigrated to the United States with his family at age ten from Malnate in the Italian Alps and studied at Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design before completing his formal education in Italy. There he became enamored of art by such early Renaissance masters as Piero della Francesca. Well known for both his landscapes and still lifes, he adopted a super-realist style, in which he reduced his subjects to their essential forms, omitting trivial detail and emphasizing crisp lines and patterns, as may be seen in this still life in which natural and artistic forms seem to carry on a dialogue of their own, which is left to the viewer to interpret.
