Olaf Carl Wieghorst American, 1899-1988 Saddling his Mount Signed O. Wieghorst and inscribed with artist's device (ll); inscribed as titled and inscribed by O. Wieghorst on the stretcher Oil on canvas 24 x 30 inches Provenance: The artist Private collection, CO, 1946 By descent in the family until 2000 Private collection, New York One of the premiere chroniclers of the American West during the second half of the twentieth century, Copenhagen-born Wieghorst sought to preserve a vanishing way of life, carrying on the tradition of Remington and Russell. He acquired firsthand knowledge of the subject he loved to paint as a soldier in the 5th United States Cavalry, a working cowboy at the Quarter Circle 2 C Ranch near Glenwood, New Mexico, and a member of the Mounted Division of New York's police force. Saddling the Mount demonstrates the artist's special affinity for horses, which intensified during his years in the cavalry when he trained and rode horses and studied equine anatomy and psychology. With the framing elements of the corral wall and fence, in this image, Wieghorst accentuated the patient stance of the horse and the quiet understanding between horse and rider.
