ARTHUR BOWEN DAVIES American, 1863-1928 "Lower Round and Ardmore". Initialed lower left "ABD". Inscribed verso "Lower Round at Ardmore - A.B. Davies". Copyright stamp for The Century Magazine. Note: Although Davies is most famous for his modernist works, he spent the early part of his career as a billboard illustrator. This illustration likely dates to the 1870s when Davies was employed by The Century. The Round Tower at Ardmore is located in Waterford, Ireland. It is still standing and looks remarkably unchanged from when Davies drew it more than 140 years ago. Provenance: Private Collection, Massachusetts. Watercolor and gouache on paper, 12 1/4" x 18".
