Emmett Owen (lr) Oil on canvas 31 x 40 inches Provenance: Private collection Exhibited: New York, Spanierman Gallery, LLC, The Road Less Traveled: New England Landscapes By Robert Emmett Owen, Jul. 19-Sept. 1, 2007, no 19 Literature: Lisa N. Peters, New York, The Road Less Traveled: New England Landscapes By Robert Emmett Owen, New York: Spanierman Gallery, LLC, 2007 Owen carried on the Impressionist tradition of Twachtman into the twentieth century in his penchant for depicting landscapes in transition from winter to spring. He often brought out the decorative patterning of snow still clinging to the hillside and the road edge, while in this instance, he featured one of the back roads on which he loved to travel by car, stopping frequently to paint. In his art, as in this painting, he combined an enjoyment of taking in the beauty of one's surroundings with a sense of excitement as to the adventure that lies ahead.
