John Whorf American, 1903-1959 Morning Wind, Punt Gunner Signed John Whorf (lr) Watercolor, graphite pencil and gouache on paper 15 x 22 3/4 inches Provenance: Private collection Exhibited: New York, Spanierman Gallery, LLC, Watercolors by John Whorf, Feb. 23-Mar. 24, 2012 In a commentary related to this image of a "punt gunner," Lisa N. Peters wrote in her 2012 essay, "'An Active Outdoor Life': Watercolors by John Whorf": In a great many of his works, Whorf expressed the American love of the great outdoors, often focusing on masculine pleasures. . . . Like Winslow Homer's scenes of the Adirondacks and Prout's Neck, Maine, and Frank Benson's sporting pictures, Whorf's capture direct experiences of places on the water, at the coast, and in the mountains that are free of exaggeration or excessive drama. With few exceptions, his images are not of heroic figures braving the elements, but of fishermen and hunters who enjoy the beauty of nature as much as they do the catch and outdoorsmen who pause from their pursuits to feel awe at their surroundings. Whorf's delight in these subjects was remarked on by a commentator, who noted in 1931: 'his camping and hunting scenes show where his heart is.'"
