(lr) Watercolor on paper 21 3/4 x 14 3/8 inches Provenance: Estate of Françoise Hermann, Cape Cod, MA Whorf's versatility in watercolor is demonstrated in this double-sided image in which on the recto he depicted water and rocks with a confident verve, suggestive of the style of Sargent (who offered him criticism in Boston). He rendered the figures with a more controlled touch, capturing the trepidation felt by the mother at the cold water, which is not experienced by her child.
