Henry J. Glintenkamp American, 1887-1946 Rooftops, Hoboken, New Jersey Signed Glintenkamp (ll) Oil on canvas 26 x 32 inches Provenance: Graham Gallery, New York Private collection Born in Augusta, New Jersey, Glintenkamp studied at the National Academy of Design and at the New York School of Art, where his teachers included Robert Henri and John Sloan. In 1908, he shared studio space with his friends Stuart Davis and Glenn O. Coleman, constituting a trio committed to Henri's realism and the portrayal of urban life. During this period in his art, Glintenkamp spent much of his time roaming the streets and bars of Manhattan in search of subject matter. This image of Hoboken rooftops dates from this era, representing the artist's search for aesthetic compositions in urban forms. The patterned array of the angled structures anticipates the modernist approach to which Glintenkamp would adhere in the years following the Armory Show of 1913.
