Gruppe on the stretcher Oil on canvas 20 x 24 inches Provenance: Private collection Exhibited: New York, Spanierman Gallery, LLC, Emile A. Gruppe (1896-1978), Jul. 10-Aug. 30, 2008 Rockport, MA, The Rockport Art Association, Emile Gruppe Retrospective, Oct. 5-Nov. 23, 2008 Born in Rochester, New York, Emile Gruppe studied in New York City and in Paris. After settling in Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1925, he focused on portraying the town's bustling harbor and sunlit shores, never missing a day of painting. Fish House, Cape Ann exemplifies his Impressionist-inspired aesthetic, revealing his ability to evoke nuances of light and atmosphere with a subtle range of colors and bold, vigorous brushwork. The fishing shack perched on a precarious dock and the beached and anchored boats in this scene provided him with an opportunity to use his brush with energetic directional strokes, creating an allover surface design.
