Peters, "An Active Outdoor Art": Watercolors by John Whorf, online cat. (New York: Spanierman Gallery, LLC, 2012), 3-4 color illus. Cat. 4 Renowned for watercolors that revealed a deft technique, an emphasis on mood, and an ability to convey nuances of light and atmosphere, John Whorf was a highly popular artist in the early twentieth century who carried on the tradition of Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent. The latter bought one of Whorf's watercolors on a visit to Boston in 1924 and offered to critique Whorf's work. Associated with Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he summered in the 1920s and 30s and moved permanently in 1937, Whorf had a passion for portraying the fishing life on the water. His affinity for the subject is apparent in this work, in which we feel the sense of adventure along with the hunter heading past marshes toward new waterways.
