Pastel. Dimensions: 104 x 90 cm (with frame). Large pastel signed by Charles Doumont and dated 1942, created as a study for the mythological subject of Oedipus and the Sphinx. The work is located in Clermont-Ferrand and is presented in an antique early 19th-century frame, showing signs of use and minor imperfections consistent with its age. Charles Doumont (Belgium, 1879–1954) was a Belgian painter active in the first half of the 20th century, a regular participant in numerous salons and exhibitions, especially in Charleroi, where he exhibited alongside artists such as Pierre Paulus. The composition is notable for the expressive power of the drawing and the dramatic nature of the subject, achieved through a solid treatment of volume and careful application of pastel.
