Marc R. Hanson (American, b. 1955). "Morning Cottonwood" pastel on Wallis paper, n.d. A quiet stand of cottonwoods rises from a veil of morning light, their crowns dissolving into a soft blue haze as if the day itself is still deciding whether to begin. In "Morning Cottonwood," Marc Hanson turns his attention to a modest grove and makes of it something luminous and deeply felt. The composition is simple - a band of cool green meadow anchoring the foreground, a layered screen of trees beyond, and a pale sky that diffuses the entire scene with gentle radiance - yet the effect is richly atmospheric. Hanson's touch in pastel is both controlled and supple. Wallis paper, with its tooth and strength, allows him to build velvety passages of color that shift from deep forest greens to tender yellow-greens catching the first light. Size of pastel: 17.25" W x 13.25" H (43.8 cm x 33.7 cm); of frame: 24" W x 20" H (61 cm x 50.8 cm) The tallest cottonwood stands slightly right of center, its branching structure subtly articulated beneath a canopy that flickers between opacity and air. To its side, a more skeletal tree, lightly brushed and spare, introduces a counterpoint of line against the softness of surrounding foliage. The horizon is low and understated, encouraging the viewer's eye to rest within the trees rather than travel beyond them. A naturalist at heart, Hanson approaches landscape not merely as scenery but as an opportunity to translate observation into visual harmony. His background in careful study and representational design is evident in the measured balance of value and temperature: cool shadows temper the warmth of early sunlight, and muted violets and blues hum quietly behind the greens. Nothing is overstated. The mood is contemplative, even intimate, as though the viewer has arrived before the wind and the noise of the day. There is a sense of lived experience in the handling of light - an understanding of how dawn flattens and softens edges before sharpening them. The pastel medium, with its immediacy and directness, becomes the perfect vehicle for conveying that fleeting interval. In this work, Hanson succeeds in what he most often seeks: communicating his joy in the landscape through disciplined craft. "Morning Cottonwood" invites the viewer to pause, to breathe, and to share in that quiet celebration of the world just as it begins to glow. About the artist: "Having grown up in a military family, Marc's youth was spent on the move. He was born in Oxnard, California and spent some of his early school years there. But his geographical resume soon included Alaska, Florida, Arkansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and Norway. After his father's retirement from the Air Force, Marc's family settled in the small northern California community of Loomis. Marc began college as a biology major, but soon applied to and was accepted into Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, majoring in illustration. After Art Center and a brief stint as a staff illustrator in Sacramento, California, Marc moved to Minnesota where he lived for 33 years while raising a family and pursuing his art. Marc has recently lived in Colorado and Mississippi before settling down on Tybee Island, GA. "I have pursued a career as a painter for many years now. Along the way my methods, materials and focus have evolved. A naturalist at heart, the landscape is the perfect vehicle for expressing the joy I have for the world that surrounds me. My real interest and challenge as a painter is how to best manipulate the core principles of painting into effective visual statements. I'm most successful when I'm able to communicate that joy to the viewers of my paintings." Marc teaches landscape painting workshops in many locations nationally. "I love working with other painters in their pursuit to better their craft. My goal is not to have them assimilate my style and technique, but to teach them how to more closely examine the subject and apply the principles that representational painters must follow to become effective visual communicators." He has shown his work in galleries and museums nationally and internationally since the early 1980's. He is a Master Signature Member of The Oil Painters of America (O.P.A.) He is a Master Signature Member of The Oil Painters of America (O.P.A.M.), having won an Award of Excellence at the O.P.A. National Exhibit in 2000, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011. In 2011 Marc's painting 'Right or Left' was awarded Bronze Medal for Painting at the OPA National Exhibition in Coeur d'Alene, ID. Among his many awards, he's placed four times in The Pastel Journal's 'Pastel 100' competition."
