작품 상세

Virgin Mary on the clouds with the child , surrounded by angels and putti. Signed in lower part 'Hans van der Heyden F', Dated in the left corner '1579, M(onth) Decemb(er)'. Washed ink drawing with the influence of mannerism. Odl laid paper with an early watermark (Lion holding a coat of arms with the letter N). ----- This clearly signed and dated period drawing is not without merits, yet it was hard to identify the author, Hans van der Heijden is not found in artists registers. As often in that period Jan and Hans could be interchangeable as Jan is the Dutch short form of Johannes and Hans is the German short form of Johannes. In areas with Dutch-German overlap (e.g. eastern Netherlands, Flanders), Jan and Hans could be used for the same person, sometimes even within official records. In core Dutch regions, Jan was dominant, while Hans appeared more in the east and south. Being an artist from Dutch origin working in Germany this makes very plausible Hans is identical to Jan. Jan van der Heyden (16th century). Painter from Cologne, was forced to move to Strasbourg for political reasons. Father of the painter Jacob van der Heyden, born in Strasbourg in 1573.
