작품 상세
This finely executed drawing depicts the so-called enthroned Roma, a marble statue from the Conservator’s Palace in Rome. It is closely related to a drawing by Frans Floris de Vriendt, who represented the statue from the same viewpoint (see final image for comparison). Floris travelled to Rome in his twenties, where he was deeply influenced by the classical statues and reliefs unearthed at that time. His Italian sojourn continued to inspire him after he returned to Antwerp around 1546. While our sheet recalls Floris’ drawing, the style here shows subtle differences: the figure of Roma is more rounded and fuller in form, with a softer facial expression that introduces a touch of Mannerism. Executed in brown ink with brown wash on tinted laid paper, the drawing likely dates to circa 1570–1620.
