작품 상세
This finely executed drawing depicts a part of a so-called Borghesian Twelve-Gods-Relief a frieze now on The Louvre in Paris. It is closely related to the drawings by Frans Floris de Vriendt . Floris travelled to Rome in his twenties, where he was deeply influenced by the classical statues and reliefs unearthed at that time. His Italian sojourn continued to inspire him after he returned to Antwerp around 1546. While our sheet recalls Floris’ drawing, the style here shows subtle differences: the shades vary, the figures have a softer facial expression, a more joyful slightly satirical appearance. Executed in brown ink with brown wash on tinted laid paper, the drawing likely dates to circa 1570–1620. It has a text beneath similar to the ones used by Floris and reads like " Antic in casa del Borge? A pos? Lomes". This text, especially the first word Antic' is similar to the inscriptions on other drawings by him from this group.
