Pen and ink with grey wash on laid paper, inscribed “Nievpoort” lower right. A finely executed landscape study showing the ruined fortifications and towers of Nieuwpoort, rendered with strong linear accents and subtle washes to suggest depth and atmosphere. The inscription “Nievpoort” identifies the location, while the date 1651 at right suggests the drawing commemorates the aftermath of the mid-17th-century sieges of the Flemish town during the Eighty Years War in July 1600. A rare and atmospheric view of post-siege ruins, evocative of the turbulent history of the Low Countries in the 17th century.
