Sergei Petrovich Ivanov/ Serge Ivanoff (Russian, French, American, 1893-1983). Portrait of Archbishop Vitaly. Pencil on paper. Signed, dated and inscribed lower left. Matted and framed. Serge Petrovitch Ivanoff was born in Moscow in 1893. Serge Ivanoff studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture from 1917. In 1922 he went to Paris, escaping the Bolsheviks. From 1960 to circa 1970, he undertook several trips to the United States and eventually returned to France. He painted mostly portraits, among them some well-known names such as Paul Valéry, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Pope Pius XI.
