Lester Wilton Raymer (1907-1991) Jury 1964 1964 The droll snapshot of what a jury of one's peers could look like is signed and dated lower right front and again verso. In a diary about his work, Lester Raymer wrote 'The test of a great work of art is its immediate impact on the viewer.'* This delightful study has impact times twelve. Each portrait has something all its own to offer, a dozen opportunities for amusing and insightful impact, thirteen when considering the work as a whole. And besides being an interesting statement on diversity, there are other layers of curiosity, like the member of the panel who appears to wear a mask, or the jurors whose heads are shaped more like an egg than almost all of Raymer's figures (though he did paint a lot of eggs). This painting is a great example of an object that, 'speaks to you.' *Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery, 'Variations of the Vision. The Art of Lester Raymer,' Traditional Fine Arts Organization, 2000, accessed 28 Feb 2023, https://tfaoi.org/aa/10aa/10aa445.htm.
